When a child reaches the age of two, their body and mind changes dramatically. First, they are becoming more mobile and therefore they can move around the house with a lot more steadiness and ease. Second, they are developing their own little personalities and are beginning to express themselves verbally and non-verbally. Many call this the "The Terrible Twos". However, it is one of the most remarkable and significant stages of a human's life.
They might be physically growing up but they are only 2 years old!
No one size fits all. Children use their senses; touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing to arrange, categorise and learn about the world around them. This in turn will develop their ability to become resilient, capable, confident and self assured. For young children, sensory play provides an opportunity for them to play and explore the world around them. Through exploring different textures, tastes and smells a child will subconsciously begin to categorise and understand the environment around them.
Children also develop in the context of relationships and the environment around them. Through play and exploration, active learning, creating and thinking critically, a child will develop and move through all areas and stages of development.
It is like walking through a field of wheat. The wheat is high and it takes energy to step it down, eventually you manage to push down enough to walk across the field. Imagine the field is your brain, the more “wheat you push down” the more exposure you have and therefore the more knowledge you are absorbing. Children are sponges, the more exposure you give a child the more chance the information will stay in the child’s brain. Similarly, the more you walk across a field of wheat, the more it will stay down and therefore the easier it will be to walk across it.
